Congratulations 2012 Rising Star Award Winners*!

Laurie Briggs — Laurie is an associate with the Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley firm in West Palm Beach, working primarily on the firm’s tobacco litigation.   She currently serves as the chair of the FJA Women’s Caucus Section, sits on the FJA Board of Directors and the Membership Committee.

Ms. Briggs is the president of the law firm's employee charity, SDSBS Giving B.A.C.K. (“Back” standing for: Basic Acts of Community Kindness), which sponsors weekly dress down days in support of charities in West Palm Beach and Tallahassee, an annual holiday toy, food and gift drive and assists local families in crisis. She also serves as president of the board of directors for Friends of Abused Children, Inc., a local charity dedicated to assisting children in foster/protective care, as vice-president of her community Homeowners’ Association and on the board of directors for the Florida Association of Counsel for Children, an organization dedicated to providing counsel for children in dependency cases in Florida.

Greg Yaffa — Greg is a member of Slawson Cunningham Whalen & Gaspari in Palm Beach Gardens, where he concentrates his practice in the areas of personal injury, wrongful death and insurance company bad faith. Greg attended the University of Richmond, where he was a pitcher on the Richmond Spiders baseball team.

Greg is a FJA Board of Director, the current Chair of the FJA Young Lawyers’ Section and a member of the Membership Committee. Greg has worked extensively on the Mock Trail Committee of the Young Lawyers Section for multiple years and has assisted our political program by walking in some desirable (and not so desirable neighborhoods) in support of pro-consumer candidates.  Greg also has been a regular in Tallahassee during the legislative sessions for many years.
